Good pome
by [info]predigested and me

My
sense
of
gravitas
will
save
my pome.

While
worlds
listen
I stand
here
like they say
chickens have legs
and
read

to
you

my
pome
.

Some
people
say
"
Good morning,
Earn,"
and
others
say
"I
didn't know
this
thing
was on."

These
are

words.

If
you
only
knew
how much
I like
my pome
you
would
say
"Good
pome."

What if
"Good pome,"
is
really
what
it is
all about?

Mercy.

Good
pome.

and it's gone

My Obama sign has been stolen. I actually predicted it would end up marred, not stolen.

Why do I live here again? Why do I sometimes defend country people against the stereotypes given them by urbanites?

Oh well.

house: please tell everyone

On October 1, this house will have been on the market for 6 months. My contract with the real estate firm will expire. At that point, I will have a chance to make new choices on how to sell this place. But before I get to that point:

Would anyone you know possibly be interested in a weekend getaway or vacation home? Would you ask? Can I put up a flyer or something anywhere?

Pricing details:
1. My non-negotiable, rock-bottom, no-haggle price would be $250k. That is assuming that I will pay no real estate commissions and no closing help.

2. Right now, a very harsh (i.e., low) estimation of the property value based on sales within the past 3 months is $284k. I can provide this analysis.

3. When we listed, the comparable properties we used sold in August 2007. Those indicated a value of $340k. We're not in August 2007 anymore, Toto! But keep in mind that this property has a lot of value to gain back if the taxpayers' rescue of Fannie and Freddie make loans cheap again.

Location details:
1. We are 0.7 mile from Bryce Resort -- or 1.9 miles to the ski slopes and golf course. This is a 4-season resort. The owner of this property gets the same resort benefits as those living on the resort (i.e., none), and membership is available for purchase if desired. Membership is not required to use the resort's facilities.

2. We are 2 hours from D.C. We're the closest ski resort to D.C. And it's a perfect place for skiing children, as it has the best ski training anywhere in the region.

Tons of pictures: Read more... )

I have a packet of information, too.

Basic info:
3BR, 2BA, 3.5-year-old house in perfect condition. Needs nothing but a new owner. Custom contemporary design with cathedral ceilings, wall of windows, 2-tier composite decks, and panoramic views. Infused with natural light. All rooms are on a single level, and most doorways are 3 feet wide (wheelchair-friendly). Kitchen has Corian counters; Master Suite includes a 7-foot jetted soaking tub and a private balcony. Unfinished basement has excellent potential for finished space (10 foot ceilings, Superior brand walls, 4 sets of walkout double glass doors, tons of natural light, wine cellar, and clear-span joists). 8 hilltop acres with year-round stream and 3+ acre clearing. We see deer daily. Horses are welcome -- as are other animals for personal (not commercial) use.

Houses in this area rent for $700 per week to vacationers, but my life is too busy to operate another business.

Please tell everyone.

a free press

Journalists were arrested at the Republican National Convention. With video.

In more fun times, does Palin's driving record qualify her to chauffeur Cheney (who long since claimed shotgun)?

And, have I missed it? Because I don't see how Palin provides any type of experience that McCain lacks (not to discredit McCain's resumé). I also don't see that she could have reasonably been a presidential candidate herself, so why choose her for a position where she may become president? Is she merely a tool to get more votes? If so, what kind of message is that?: "We're not worried about women's qualifications anyway, so let's use them as tools for short-term goals?"

Does she fit a pattern with McCain's wife (who once used her nonprofit, charitable organization to feed her prescription pills addiction): Actions don't matter; she's the one because she's pretty and female?

I'm not impressed.

Go ahead and flame me. I don't have time to respond anyway.

gas efficiency

tank of gas from Shell: 34.5 mpg
tank of gas from Liberty: 34.5 mpg
tank of gas from BP: 30.6 mpg

What gives?

I think what gives is that BP is the only one that blended in ethanol (up to 10%). And while I generally support the environmental stuff, it doesn't make much sense to grow, make, ship, and blend in ethanol (up to 10%) if it costs up to 10% in gas efficiency.

Efficiency was calculated by the dashboard of my car for that tank of gas. All fillups were regular gas in the same car in summer and were immediately sequential tanks. All tanks were driven until the "fuel" light on my dashboard came on. All driving was roughly equivalent in terms of roads, speeds, passengers, and cargo.

I think Road Magnets doesn't like corn.

newspaper headlines

I give you the most prominent headline on today's local paper (4 sections total) from sections A, C, and D (in order):

What blew through?

See Dick play.

Second best to breast

Is it me? Honestly, it can't be just me.

Biggest headline on Section B: Destined to imagine

Someone at the newspaper office has got to be giggling.

advice passed along

The only advice Bernie Boston ever gave me, he gave the first time I met him.

"Be here," he urged me, eyes gleaming from under his cowboy hat in the way that only happy-every-day eyes do. I shifted my weight on my feet. I was a newbie on the mountain, and was chronically preoccupied with quotidian fears. I wasn't certain of how to take him.

He stood in his boots a while, smiling warmly at my confusion, and his arms spread a little to indicate a wide area. "Be here," he repeated. The smile turned full grin as he spun on one boot heel and strode back toward his house.

It has been good advice. Now I offer it to all of you: Be here.

selling / buying vehicles

My forthcoming decision to drive my child to a distant school will require me to sell my truck in favor of something with high gas mileage.

That said, if anybody is interested, I will reasonably soon be selling my truck. Most of you have seen it:

2003 Nissan Frontier pickup
51,000 miles
STILL UNDER WARRANTY until 2010 or 70,000 miles
4WD
big crew cab with full back seat; 4 doors
6-foot bed
more powerful supercharger engine
automatic
new tires
roof racks, bed/gate extender, bed liner
takes premium gas, not diesel
current VA inspection
silver in color

Price is $15,000. (The private party (blue book) / trade-in (NADA) value is $14,500-$15,800 not counting the extended warranty.)

And in the same breath, I will be looking for:

(a) a used daily-use car that gets very good gas mileage (upper 30s or 40s) and has a back seat. Manual transmission drastically preferred. I'm considering something like an old VW Jetta Diesel, but I'm open.

(b) possibly a grungy old cheap anything that has 4WD or AWD, so [info]predigested has an easier time getting around on icy days.

Spread the word to anyone interested.
